What is Dalgona coffee?

Dalgona coffee is a super popular coffee drink that is made up of equal parts of instant coffee, sugar, and hot water.  It’s important to note that even though the original recipe uses real sugar, you don’t have to use real sugar in this whipped coffee recipe.  You can add any level of sweetness you want using a keto-friendly sweetener of your choice!  We’ve tried many and they all work well!  It totally depends on which one you like the best.

How does whipped coffee work?

You will use a technique where you mix the instant coffee along with the keto sweetener and hot water to create a whipped coffee.  It takes a little bit of time but it’s well worth every bit of effort to make this fantastic treat!  After you make the whipped coffee part, you can pour it over a tall glass of cold keto-friendly milk options such as cashew milk, unsweetened coconut milk, or even unsweetened almond milk.

You don’t have to drink it cold, you can also drink it hot too!  All you have to do is heat the keto friendly milk and make it the same exact way!

Where did Dalgona coffee come from?

Dalgona coffee has origins from India, Pakistan, and Macau, where it is also known as whipped coffee or beaten coffee.  It became popular in January when Actor Jung Il-woo, who had encountered the coffee in Macau.

What does Dalgona coffee taste like?

Honestly, it tastes like a latte!  A creamy latte!  It can be a bit bitter if you drink the milk and the whipped coffee separately as it’s served.  It can be bitter on top and a delightful sweet aftertaste when you finish with the milk portion.  The bitterness also depends on the ratio of instant coffee you use too though.  I’ve noticed some instant coffee brands are more bitter than others.  Use your favorite brand.  Also, you can use less instant coffee for a milder flavor too.   I personally like to use less instant coffee than the original recipe and mix up the ingredients just before I consume it for a better experience.

Do you need instant coffee to make whipped coffee or can you use coffee grounds?

No, you can make it from regular coffee but it takes a ton of work.  You should grind the coffee really fine and then filter the hot water through the coffee grounds and you will need to add a thickener like xanthan gum to it too.  I find the instant coffee is way easier to make.

How long does Dalgona coffee last?

Even though it is a whipped coffee, the fluffiness of this coffee does last for an hour or so.  I wouldn’t normally suggest whipping something and allowing it to sit out though.  You want to enjoy the flavor when it’s first made for the best experience.

Can I make this Dalgona coffee sugar free?

Yes, I highly suggest using a keto-friendly confectioner’s blend sugar alternative.  The confectioner’s blend is ground so fine and it’s easy to cream together in this recipe.  The granular sugar alternatives can leave a gritty taste.  I would avoid the granular options.  If the granular options are all you have on hand, you can easily add them to a food processor or blender without liquid to blend them down to a finer consistency if needed.

It’s important to note that sugar alcohols like xylitol and inulin, and erythritol have a sweet flavor that closely resembles table sugar, without that bitter aftertaste found in other sugar substitutes.  I oftentimes will blend different sweeteners together if one is too strong or one is too bitter.  I do like to add a couple of drops of liquid stevia to another keto sweetener to balance out the taste and takes away the bitterness or aftertaste.

Can you use decaf instant coffee to make this whipped coffee?

Yes!  The instructions are exactly the same.

Can you make this whipped coffee ahead of time?

Yes, you betcha!  But be sure to keep it in a sealed container in the refrigerator.  If it becomes too watery or loses its peaks from the frothiness, you can simply add it to the blender again.

What is the best tool needed to mix this whipped coffee?

Here’s a list of tools you can use to whip the coffee.  Out of all the tools listed below, I think the stand mixer, hand mixer, or the immersion blender works the best.  It’s because these tools have enough power to hold a high rate of speed to blend the coffee faster.  I wouldn’t want to attempt a fork or a hand whisk because of all the time it would take and the energy.  The mason jar or bottle would take just as much energy.  Remember making ice cream in a mason jar?  It takes forever but it can be done.

What are the other names they call this whipped coffee?

I’ve heard this coffee called:

  • whipped coffee
  • cloud coffee
  • frothy coffee
  • frappe coffee
  • beaten coffee
  • Dalgona coffee

Why is my whipped coffee not working?

If your whipped coffee is not working, I would guess you need to have a bit of patience and time to whip the coffee at a higher speed and more time.

What type of instant coffee did you use in this recipe:

I used Nescafe Clasico instant coffee.

Pro Tips

  1. Use a small tall glass with a small immersion blender with the whipping attachment for a single serving. Or make multiple servings at a time and use a hand mixer. You want the liquid to form stiff peaks.
  2. Use hot water!  This is important because it helps to dissolve the instant coffee and the keto sweetener.
  3. If using a large stand mixer, you might want to make a bigger batch by tripling the recipe.  It’s really hard to use a stand mixer with the basic recipe.
  4. If you want to make this ahead of time, keep it stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator.  If it losses the air or becomes too watery you can add it to the blender again to get those stiff peaks back.

If you like fresh tasting coffee, you should try grinding your own coffee!  It’s fantastic and tastes very different from coffee grounds that are already ground for you.

Instructions

  • Combine the instant coffee, monk fruit, vanilla, salt, and hot water. Mix it until frothy and forms peaks. This may take anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes depending on your mixing tool.
  • Pour a keto-friendly hot or cold milk (unsweet coconut milk, cashew milk, or almond milk) into a glass leaving room at the top for the whipped coffee.
  • Add the whipped coffee on top of the keto-friendly milk of your choice.
  • Enjoy!

How to Serve Dalgana Coffee

  • Serve with iced coconut milk or almond milk about 8 ounces filled in the cup but be sure to leave enough room for the whipped coffee on top.
  • Serve it hot! Warm the milk/cream in the microwave. I personally like to add a tablespoon of heavy cream to give it a thicker consistency. You can even add a drop or two of liquid sweetener to your milk choice too. Then top with the whipped coffee.
