Are Salmon Patties Keto?

Someone asked me the other day if salmon patties are keto… It all depends on the ingredients you use to bind and form the patty. This salmon patty recipe is definitely keto friendly! We use eggs, cheese, and pork rinds to bind and form our salmon patties!

You can use flavored pork rinds to add another level of flavor too. Just be sure the pork rinds don’t have any added sugars in those seasonings. Did you know you can buy pork rinds that are already processed into breadcrumbs! Look at these options below:

Are Salmon Patties Low Carb?

Yes, these are lower carb than your normal salmon patties recipe because we don’t use any flour in this recipe. The recipe comes together with eggs and cheese to help them form the salmon patties.

Here’s a quick video showing how we made these keto salmon patties!  It’s super simple!  Watch!

Keto Salmon Patties Recipe Ingredients

2 – 5 oz cans of salmon
2 eggs, whipped
1/2 cup shredded cheese
4 oz pork rinds, ground up into crumbs
2 tbs Pico de Gallo (basically its chopped onion, tomato, and a little jalapeño)

Keto Salmon Patties Recipe Instructions

Open the cans of salmon and drain the liquid.
Pulse the pork rinds in a food processor until they become small crumbs.
In a small bowl combine all the ingredients and mix it until it’s fully combined.
Separate the mixture into six equal parts and press the dough into small round patties.
Fry the keto salmon patties in coconut oil for a few minutes on each side (until golden brown).
Serve warm and enjoy!

Absolutely delicious!!! The whole family loved them! Next time I plan to make a double or triple batch!

How to Cook Keto Salmon Patties

Be sure to preheat your skillet. This is extremely important. My daughter went to make this recipe and she didn’t preheat the oil in the pan. The salmon patties will not hold a shape if they are sitting in cold oil for a long period of time.

First, make the dough.
Then, preheat the frying pan with the oil in it.
Then, fry the keto salmon patties once the skillet is nice and hot.
Be sure to keep a plate topped with paper towels nearby so that when they are done frying, you can lay them on the paper towels to help absorb the excess oil from the keto salmon patties.

Frequently Asked Questions about our Keto Salmon Patties Recipe

What Can You Eat Salmon Patties With?

Often times I search them with a side salad loaded with ranch dressing. I also like to serve them with zoodles or loaded mashed cauliflower! One of my favorite side dish recipes is this Keto Cauliflower Mac and Cheese recipe!

Are Keto Salmon Patties Healthy for You?

Yes! Keto Salmon Patties offer an excellent source of high-quality protein, vitamins, and minerals (including potassium, selenium and vitamin B12) along with their content of omega-3 fatty acids that make them healthy! It’s an added bonus that they are low carb and keto-friendly!

What is a sauce you can use with these Keto Salmon Patties?

I like to make a homemade tartar sauce.  Try this recipe:
3T dill relish or finely chopped dill pickle
1 1/2 T dill
1 T lemon juice
1 t mustard
1 t minced garlic
1/2 t onion powder
Salt & Pepper to taste

Are these Keto Salmon Patties Good for Diabetics?

Yes, This particular Keto Salmon Patties recipe is awesome for diabetics because it’s a low glycemic food! It won’t spike your insulin levels like regular salmon patties made with flour. It’s the reduction of carbs and sugar that really help control your blood sugar.

Are Keto Salmon Patties Gluten-Free?

This recipe is gluten-free. We don’t use any flours in the Keto Salmon Patties recipe at all.

How Long Are Salmon Patties Good For in the Fridge?

I’ve only kept these Keto Salmon Patties in the fridge for two days after they have been cooked. I’m not sure how much longer past two days they would be good. I don’t normally keep anything with salmon or fish in the fridge for long periods of time. This recipe won’t allow for many leftovers for that very reason. We prefer to eat them when they are hot and fresh! They do taste cold right from the fridge though too!

Why are my Salmon Patties falling apart?

If your salmon patties are falling apart when you are frying them, it’s because you haven’t let them cook and crisp up long enough on each side to form a nice cheesy crispy crust. Don’t flip them in the skillet until you lift up part of the patty and you can see it has browned beautifully on the bottom side. You also want to make sure your skillet is nice and hot before you start frying these Keto Salmon Patties too. You really don’t want the salmon dough to sit in cold oil for a long period of time. Heat the skillet first.

Can Salmon Patties be Frozen After Cooking Them?

This is one thing I have not tried. My whole family enjoys this recipe so much that we never had enough leftover to freeze. If you try freezing them, please let me know in the comments below.

Can you make Canned Salmon Patties with Eggs?

Yes, you can but I would suggest you add more pork rinds or more cheese to replace the egg as the binder in the recipe. If not, they may not have enough binder ingredients in the recipe to hold it’s shape. If you remove the eggs, I would add another 1/4 cup of shredded cheese to the dough.
