Are you craving a Keto Taco Salad with a crispy bowl that you can eat?  Yah, me too!  I created a few different options if you want to save the carbs and go for this low carb and keto friendly taco salad bowl option.

We made these keto taco shells two different ways.  You can make a low carb version using low carb tortillas you buy pre-made from the store.  They are most definitely low carb but if you are strict keto, you tend to stay away from those ingredients.

Keto people we have an option for you too!  This one is kinda like the chaffle recipes we make but we make it with cheese and egg with a few other seasonings in a Dash Waffle Bowl maker!  I’m telling you, it’s worth the purchase!  I love my bowl maker and I really do use it.

It’s not one of those mini kitchen appliances you buy and use only once or twice.  This one gets used!  We have taco salads at least once a week.

I’ve also used this waffle bowl maker to make a chocolate protein bowl  for dessert and I filled it with keto friendly ice cream and sugar free chocolate syrup!  OMG!  It was delightful.

Keto Taco Salad Bowl Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (We used a Colby blend)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/8 tsp garlic powder
  • Optional:  1 tbs almond flour

Keto Taco Bowl Salad Bowl Instructions

  1. Preheat the waffle bowl maker.  There is no need to spray it with non stick cooking spray as long as the bowl isn’t scratched.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the shredded cheese, egg, seasonings and almond flour, if using.  Mix well until fully combined.
  3. Note:  The almond flour adds more structure to the taco salad shell.  If you want a lighter and crispier shell, don’t use the almond flour.  I personally like them both ways!
  4. Place all of the batter into the waffle maker and press the lid closed.  DO NOT open the lid for 4 minutes.  If you open the lid before the time is up, you will have a gooey mess because the cheese needs time to firm up and create a nice crust.
  5. Using a tongs or fork, remove the taco shell from the waffle bowl maker.
  6. Unplug the waffle bowl maker when you are done using it.
  7. Set the bowl aside to cool and assembly the ingredients you need to fill your taco salad bowl.

How to Make a Taco Shell with a Low Carb Tortilla

Cut one tortilla from the outside to the center three times to help with curve and lay nicely in the waffle bowl maker.

Preheat the waffle bowl maker.

Place the cut tortilla inside the waffle bowl maker and close the lid.  Allow it to cook for 1 minute or 1 1/2 minutes if you want a crispy shell.  The bowl forms perfectly and it holds a good amount of salad and taco meat with all the toppings too!

Keto Taco Salad Bowl Fillings and Toppings

We used leftover taco meat that has been seasoned with our homemade keto taco seasoning, shredded Romaine lettuce, diced tomatoes, sour cream, more shredded cheese and a squirt of our favorite spicy mayo.

Taco Seasoning Ingredients:

  • 1 Tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 Tablespoon ground chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper (use 1/4 if you want it milder)
  • 1 Tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 Tablespoon garlic powder

Secret Ingredient:  Add a 1/4 teaspoon of Cocoa Powder to your recipe to give it a rich taste (this is exactly what Taco Bell does)

Use about 2 to 3 tablespoons per pound of ground beef.

Combine all the ingredients above and store it in a mason jar for use later.

To make the spicy mayo simply add half mayo and half sriracha sauce in a bowl and mix it until it’s combined.  We keep this in a squeeze bottle with a lid and make a new batch every week because we put it on everything from burgers to hot dogs to tacos like this!
