Top 5 Reasons Your Digestive System is Out of Control and What To Do About It

Are you struggling with a gut problem? If so, don’t worry. We’re here to help! Here are the top five reasons why your digestion may not be working properly and some suggestions on how to fix it.

Believe it or not, our digestive system (aka gut health) is one of the most important parts of our health and well-being. When it is not functioning properly, a variety of issues can arise from digestive problems to skin irritations. If you’re feeling off but don’t know why, here are the top 5 reasons your digestive system may be out of whack:

Why Your Gut Health May Be Out of Control

Poor Diet

Eating an unhealthy or unbalanced diet can have a huge impact on the health of your gut. Eating processed and sugary foods, not enough fiber, and an overload of sugar can all lead to digestive issues like bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. The reason this happens is because processed foods cause your gut to have low acid.

Low acid is the most common reason for dysbiosis. Dysbiosis is an imbalance in the gut microbial community that is associated with disease.

To address this issue, focus on eating a diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods and probiotics. We have tons of great recipes that are not only healthy, but also delicious without the guilt!

Stress

Stress is one of the most overlooked factors that affects our gut health. When we are under stress, our body releases hormones that can cause the gut to become inflamed and upset the balance of good bacteria.

It also decreases the activity of digestive enzymes in the small intestine, which makes it harder for your body to break down food. To help reduce stress, practice deep breathing exercises and mindfulness meditation.

Most of use need the aid of digestive enzymes to help breakdown our foods. Not all digestive enzymes are created equally either. The Now Brand Super Enzymes is my favorite because it has all the enzymes to cover all foods (carbs, fats and protein).

Lack of Exercise

A lack of exercise can contribute to poor gut health in multiple ways. Not only does it not give your digestive system a chance to move food through your body properly, it can also cause an increase in stress hormones.

A sedentary lifestyle can slow down your digestion and lead to a feeling of bloating and sluggishness. To get things moving again, make sure you are getting regular physical activity such as walking, jogging, or cycling.

I tend to walk right after a big meal because it not only aids in digestion but it also helps to lower a glucose spike too.

WORKOUT CHALLENGE

Antibiotics

Antibiotic use can have a negative effect on the gut microbiome, killing off both good and bad bacteria. This can lead to digestive issues like bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. Sometimes antibiotics are necessary but we often find the conditions return a month after use.

If you must take antibiotics for an illness, it’s important to supplement with probiotics to help restore balance in your microbiome but not all probiotics are created equal either.

Most of the time you have to take probiotics for 3 times the amount of length you took the antibiotics. For example, if you took antibiotics for one week, then you need to supplement with probiotics for a minimum of 3 weeks.

Not all probiotics are created equally either! In fact, most of them on the market do very little good for your gut because they don’t survive the digestion process.

My favorite product that has a wide variety of probiotics is MegaSporeBiotic made by Microbiome labs. It’s one of the few products on the market with actual science behind how and why it works. It’s the probiotics and spores I take myself and have noticed a HUGE difference!

Leaky Gut Syndrome

Leaky gut syndrome is a condition where the lining of the gut becomes damaged, allowing bacteria and toxins to pass into the bloodstream. This can lead to inflammation and serious digestive issues.

If you think you may be suffering from this condition, it’s important to consult your doctor. The good news is, it can be treated with dietary changes and supplements.

Get Your Gut Health Under Control

If you think your digestive system is out of whack, there are steps you can take to address it:

  1. Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fiber and probiotics.
  2. Incorporate stress-reducing activities like yoga or meditation into your life.
  3. Get regular exercise to keep your gut in motion.
  4. Reduce antibiotic use and opt for natural remedies instead.
  5. Consult a doctor if you suspect you have Leaky Gut Syndrome, as it can be treated with dietary changes and supplements.

While these steps help to address the issues in the long term, you may need or want to take additional supplements to restore your gut health in a much faster way.
